ST. ANDREW’S HIGH SCHOOL
St Andrews High School was established in October 1979, in Londonderry, Wesley area. The opening of the, School was a response to the educational needs of students from the Northeast region, extending from the Kalinago Territory to Calibishie, Domini One of the main challenges the students faced was the difficulty of accessing secondary school education in the existing schools, located in the Roseau and Portsmouth area, following the aftermath of Hurricane David. The establishment of the school was spearheaded by the Methodist Church, however, by in collaboratin with the Government of Dominica, the school was able to operate as a government assisted school throughout its entire existence. In the early years of the school, there were major community involvement comprising of the students parents and teachers working together to improve the facilities, and building of new classrooms and aboratory. One of the most significant contribution was made by representative members of the United Methodist Church located in the United State The founding of St. Andrew’s High School did not only a platform for learning but also contributed to a broader community development. The school’s campus was located in an ideal site which served as a campsite for local, regional and international groups. The school’s campus consists of the main auditorium which was used for morning assemblies, ceremonies and large activities. There was also a fully equipped canteen which in addition to providing meals it was also used for food and nutrition classes. The science laboratory was stocked with all the general equipment's needed to enhance testing for the students which was a great advantage to them In addition to the core academic subjects offered ,there were a of other subjects such as Spanish, French and extensive Agricultural Science Furthermore, the school kept abreast with technology changes by implementing computer technology classes utilizing past student and teachers that were highly knowledgeable to help improve and assist the students. With the leadership of Principal David Edwards, the St Andrews High School was not only able to meet the expected results but exceeded in comparison with other high schools in the country
St Andrews High School served as an academic institution but also contributed towards the growth of the neighboring communities by providing employment and also several vocational trade classes including mechanic, agriculture and welding.
From 1979 to 2006 the St Andrews High School has bridged the gap between the past, present and the future. It has created dreams, aspirations and realities and has served as a beacon of guidance and faith for its past students and the communities that was impacted during its tenure.
